 ISLAMABAD: In a key meeting of the PDM chaired by Maulana Fazlur Rehman, differences between the opposition parties over resignations and the long march came to the fore.


Talking to media after the summit, PDM chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman said that the nine parties of the alliance were in favor of linking the Long March to resignations while the PPP had reservations about it and had formed its own Central Executive Committee. He has asked for a respite in this regard till the next meeting. He announced that the long march on March 26 should be postponed till a decision is taken on the resignations of the PPP.


Chief PDM Maulana Fazlur Rehman announced to postpone the long march of the opposition and left without asking any questions from the journalists.

On the occasion, PPP leader and former prime minister Senator Yousuf Raza Gilani said that the decision not to resign was taken by the party's central executive, so he has asked for time to take the decision back to the same forum. The issue of resignations will be taken up again in the meeting of the Central Executive Committee. PDM parties are united against the government. He said that we have won the election of the Senate chairman and the unjust decision to reject the votes will have to be canceled soon ۔


The inside story of the meeting


Earlier, the summit of the opposition parties' coalition PDM lasted for about six hours and its internal story came to light. Regarding the meeting, Express sources said that the long march could be taken after Eid. At present, the long march will be postponed and then consultative meetings will be held. Besides, there is no consensus on resignations in the PDM meeting and there will be no long march till resignations are submitted.

According to sources, PDM chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman said that the opposition was called for a final decision today. On the other hand, the PPP once again sought a respite from the Central Executive Committee for consultation.


According to sources, the PPP took the position that further consultation with the party was necessary on the issue of resignations. In the meeting, Asif Zardari said that the position presented today was stated in the light of CEC decisions.


Sources said that JUI, PML-N and other parties were of the view that the long march would be useless without resignations. Until they resign, the government cannot be put under pressure.

In addition, the two major parties disagreed on the issue of the Leader of the Opposition in the Senate. The PPP has demanded that only the majority party be given the post of Leader of the Opposition, on which other parties have expressed reservations that when a final consultation has taken place regarding the Chairman, Deputy Chairman and Leader of the Opposition, then a new demand. In the meeting, PDM chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman said that 9 parties are on one side and PPP is on the other side.


An important meeting of the PDM, an alliance of opposition parties, was held in Islamabad under the chairmanship of Maulana Fazlur Rehman, leader of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam.
