Discovery of 400 year old tunnel from Royal Fort, Lahore

During the restoration work in the royal fort of Lahore, a four-hundred-year-old tunnel has been discovered which is still standing today. Air and light are also provided inside the tunnel while niches have also been made for lighting lamps.

The Royal Fort of Lahore is an important monument of the Mughal period. Under the present buildings of the fort, a network of secret basements, corridors and tunnels has been laid. Recently, a four-hundred-year-old tunnel has been found. The walls of this tunnel are firmly in place.

Hafiz Omar, a sub-engineer of the Walled City of Lahore Authority, who was working on the project, said that some time ago, when the renovation and renovation work of Moti Masjid and Maktab Khana was started, traces of the tunnel were found during excavation. When further excavations and research revealed that this is a drain system that was built 400 years ago, initially the 625 feet long tunnel has been restored while further work will be done in the next phase.

This tunnel passes under different parts of the royal fort. Enter the tunnel and you will find many small tunnels along with the main tunnel. Lighting and air supply are also arranged at different distances. The tunnel is so large that it can be easily crossed.

According to Hafiz Omar, during the rainy season, the water collected in the fort used to accumulate in the tunnels, which damaged various parts of the fort, including the Moti Masjid, Maktab Khana, Haveli Mai Jindan and the museum building. Initially, the 625-foot-long tunnel has been repaired and cleaned to enable drainage, and rainwater flows out of the ancient tunnel.

According to experts, restoring the tunnel and drain, which has been closed for four years, was a very

difficult task. In developed countries, modern machinery and equipment are used for such works, but we have completed the work in the traditional way. Snakes and scorpions were also recovered during the excavation. ۔ "We are happy that the tunnel is functional," he said.

According to archaeologists, the tunnel was apparently used only for the drainage system, but the size of the tunnel, which is large enough to hold a lamp, suggests that the tunnel may have been used as a secret passage.

After excavating in different parts of the royal fort, the Walled City of Lahore Authority has also discovered ammunition, the royal kitchen, the baths of the Jahangiri era, the basement under the Black Bridge and the corridors. According to experts, the fort has seven layers, meaning it was demolished and rebuilt seven times. Excavations will be started in any part of the fort and many artefacts will be recovered from below.
